Suggested Activities: Follow the dance lyrics: jump up,

 squat down, hand over eyes- turn around. Chorus: do

Charleston step,

use outstretched fingers, shaking hands and dance with

 swinging arms, one foot planted on the ground the

other swinging- to the front, to the back, to the front,

to the back etc. finishing with a bow (hands by sides).

For best results, this Charleston

step should be taught and practiced.

Suggested Activities: Make a circle. Stand like a penguin, hands tucked into your sides and knees together toes facing outward.…sing and echo sing while following all the dance instructions in the song. Begin by waddling or doing the ‘Charlie Chaplin’ type of shuffle in a circle. Shuffle left, then right, spin around, flap wings (arms) into your sides, shuffle in, shuffle out, flap wings and then with outstretched arms tucked close to the body, do 3 claps. Fun to do all the while echoing what the leader sings!

Suggested Activities: Dance in a circle and do all actions. Make up your own veres, Make a long list of all the Aussie animals you want to sing about…. Ask for solo singers to sing next instruction. Between each verse in rhythmical fashion teacher moves and calls out movement, eg jump jump jump, prance prance prance….children copy in time to . Create different rhythmic patterns between each verse, ask the children to echo these back.

Try this with instruments:

* shaking -dig echidnas dig dig dig- use egg maraccas

* tapping- peck emus peck, just peck peck peck- use claves

* scraping -Climb koalas climb climb climb-guiros

* ringing -fly cockatoos just flap your wings, -bells

 

Another version with instruments:

'Round in a circle let's all play let’s play altogether

 play Aussie band, just; shake, bounce, tap, ring, scrape,

 Bush mates now forever!

Make up your own verses and rhythmic patterns

 

Suggested Activities: Dig, roll, crawl, waddle, and follow actions. Pass the wombat puppet so that many repetitions can be sung. Sing in combination with wombats waddling, back to back, so that you hear the different modalities and time signatures.

Suggested Activities: Present the story and perform as a mini musical with parts for a narrator, frog and a range of Aussie animals. Great when presented with puppets, some frog guiros and a range of tuned and non tuned percussion. Use egg maracas for snakes, rainstick for rain sounds, vibraslap for kangaroo, tone block for wombat, wooden effects for eel…..etc.
